Necro Loot Counters

These have been sitting around on my workbench for quite some time. I'm a shocker for starting stuff and then getting distracted by something else. I call it "dog in a high wind syndrome".

Anyway, I've got a few days off so I focused myself and finished these. I can't remember where I saw the originals but I admit to shamelessly copying the idea. And before you ask, yes that is a toilet. In the grim dark future a quiet 5 minutes spent out of danger is worth its weight in porcelain...

Motivated I am...

I can't find the freaking camera. It's around somewhere. It may well still be in the car from Sunday but I'm not going to go hunting about the place at this late juncture trying to locate the rotten thing. [deep breath]

Anyway, the point of looking for the camera was to snap some shots of the Warhammer Fantasy Battle Lizardmen Saurus (x20) which I've just finished basing. These belong to the El Cheapo Communal Army of Doom, assembled from donations, eBay and other sources, intended for use as an opponent for my Dogs of War.

However, no camera equals no pics. Soooo..... in lieu of pics of the reptiles, here's a couple of screen shots from Point Motivator which is a dandy little tool intended to help motivate you to do stuff, in my case gaming stuff. Now I'm generally not known for lacking motivation in this regard, devoting between 1-2 hours almost every day to my obsession.

Having said that, PM is pretty nifty and is enabling me to keep a much better handle on what I get done. PM allows you to allocate an arbitrary value to an item and then "earn" points by doing x many of whatever it is. I based my points on size, i.e.) a 25mm painted mini = 25 points. I was tempted to go 28 but I'm not suitably heroic [snort]. If you want my point values drop me a comment and I'll make the file available.

Hopefully tomorrow I can find the camera and take some pics to prove I didn't start this rant for no good reason ;-)

The Russians are coming!

Russ and I played a 1,500pt Mid War game of Flames of War on Friday night - Russian Strelkovy vs. Aussie Infantry, both sides trying to capture a series of important river crossings near a village. As you can guess high quantity vs. high quality can be a bit predictable when both sides are also fearless. In the end my Russians squeezed out a minor victory as the numbers simply proved to be too many for the Aussies to overcome. I'm still getting used to the camera at night time so the majority of the pics are not worth publishing. Here's the best of what we took:

Got hut?

As promised here's the completed huts. The thatching has proved quite tough with the glue and paint combo. It's not rigid, more like thick leather, but it will certainly stand prolonged use and handling.

First the unpainted versions...



And the painted versions. Black spray undercoat followed by three layers of tan through cream on the thatch and dark brown with a cream dry brush on the timber...



Next up is the pallisade / stockade. I'm thinking of buy that in resin as there are a few decently priced sets about. Then again maybe the miniatures vs terrain argument will win out in the bank account department and I'll make them ;-)

Dark Age thatched cottages

We've got a Dark Age skirmish campaign coming up soon, beginning with a Viking Raid. In order for that to happen, the Vikings need something TO raid. Consequently I'm trying my hand at knocking out a few Dark Age thatched cottages. Along with a very basic log stockade they will form the local Anglo-Saxon village which is subject to Viking terror. Inspired by this tutorial on making thatched roofs I decided to have a go...

Here is the basic frame of the house and cladding materials. The thatch (as you'll see if you read the article) is an old bath mat. The frame is 5mm foamboard nicked from the offcuts bin at work. The boards came from a seller on eBay who sells them by the bag.

And here is the basic finished cottage. Having not made on of these before I'm not 100% sure I've soaked the "thatch" with enough glue. Once its dry I'll see how stiff it is and I can always do another coat if required. It will get a good few coats of paint on top so it will toughen up quite a lot.

I'm reasonably happy with the first hut. I've got two more of the same size and a larger one for the village headman. I'll post some pics when they're done.
