A Return of Sorts

It's been a pretty horrible couple of years, hasn't it?

We've lost loved ones, been beset by fires and floods, and found ourselves in the middle of a pandemic whose overriding theme has become 'let it rip'. It leaves one feeling a bit let down.

But dammit, I mustn't get stuck in the Slough of Despond!

Or is that the Swamp of Sadness...?

After what has been far too long a hiatus, I decided I had to do something, anything really, to try and unwind from all the depressing garbage the last two years have heaped upon us. Gardening and cooking are all very well, but sometimes you need to get back to your hobby roots.

Of course, as a longtime fan of Greg Stafford's world of Glorantha, I wanted some models which would fit well within a RuneQuest campaign.

So I ordered some figures from Fenris Games, makers of some of the most engagingly weird and wonderful sculpts on the market, and got to work for the first time in ages. Fenris Games have a good many minis suitable for Glorantha, but I settled upon some adventurer types and some chaotic abominations.

First off the bench was this guy;

He's billed as "Lance, Kara'Safra - pumpkin head bear", but all Gloranthaphiles know a Jack O'Bear when they see one! This beastie hits its enemies with a paralyzing gaze before ripping them limb from limb.

Next up was Squidhead Fred, a tentacled monstrosity which haunts the desolate swamps and fens, looking for its next snack (spoilers, it's player characters!). He was a tough one to paint, what with all the arms and differing textures, but he didn't turn out too badly.

Well, it's a start! Getting back into the swing of painting again might be just what I need. Let's see if I can maintain a modicum of momentum.

Stay tuned!

Kill Team Chaos Cultists and Harlequins

On Friday my mate Nug and I played a game of Kill Team. I think from memory it was my third.

A few of the rules still seem a bit, um... off... to me especially the charge something you can't see idea but it is fun.

I took a few pics of Nug's Harlequins (beautiful!) and my newly painted Chaos Cultists. Enjoy!

Kill Team - Heretic Astartes - Half-Dozen Second Cousins of Chaos

I've played a few games of the new Warhammer 40K Kill Team game of late, enough to convince me that it's worth me painting up a team or three.

My mate Pete kindly gave me a bunch of old plastic Chaos Marines he had scored off fleaBay a while back. They were in a pretty poor state paint-wise and a couple needed some repair and re-positioning of arms and weapons but they were certainly serviceable and most welcome. Last night and on and off today I have been speed painting five of them as Slaanesh to form the core of my team, somewhat tongue-in-cheek named the Half-Dozen Second Cousins of Chaos.

These guys were once members of other chapters but their particular perversions were simply to out there for them to be tolerated by proper wrong-thinking Slaaneshi so they were exiled, left to drift through space and time until they found each other.

From left to right we have Brother Click Bait, Brother Big Brother, Brother Dutch Oven, Brother Crocs (hence the horrid green feet) and Brother Coldplay.

I have a bunch of plastic Cultists assembled and ready for painting too. Those should go under the brush starting tomorrow night and will likely be finished next weekend. Suggestions for names are most welcome, and that means YOU Evan :-)

Sandbags and workbenches

It's raining, it's pouring. Quite literally pouring. As I type this at 5:17pm we're just shy of 4" of rain since midnight. Yesterday was just as wet. What does this mean? Lot's of painting and overexposed photography, that's what!

Since Saturday morning I've knocked off another four Oldhammer Chaos Warriors...

I've also been working away on a second-hand 40K Landraider I picked up at CANCON. Some time ago it looked like this...

...and it now looks like this...

Admittedly it looks like I've turned it 180 and painted a couple of bits black. You'll just have to take my word for it that a LOT more has been done.

Workbench update

Apart from the terrain building I've been indulging in of late I've also regained enough of my after-work mojo to get back on the brushes. This might in part be due to purchasing a metric sh1t-tonne of minis I shouldn't have but whatever gets you motivated right?

This week I've been back into the seemingly never ending Savage Orc project and made some inroads on the second batch of boar riders. They're coming along nicely and will soon be ready to embarrass themselves on the table top.

At the same time I've been indulging myself in a little Oldhammer goodness. I've been picking up 80s Chaos Warriors on and off for a while now but have held off painting them til post Challenge as they take a lot of effort given I'm painting them one at a time. I've let myself go a bit with the palette as you can see both as a bit of personal challenge to try new stuff but also in an attempt to get that real Realm of Chaos crazy vibe going.

These are a joy to paint. Every one has a personality all his (or her, or it's) own. Their names from the catalogues are pure gold too. This lot includes left-to-rigth: Chengis Crump, Arack, Krayos Dleth, Xarytus Deathflail, Sir Gilgal de Appliance (candidate for BEST. NAME. EVER!!!), I can't remember (not his name!) and Gladstone the Large . There's another eight still to go so I've still got plenty of scope for brown, purple, pink, orange and whatever else I can dream up. :-)

Cheers,
Millsy
