Loyale Goodfolk of Ye Three Leggged Duck Publick House

Last of the ECW for now, this is a unit of ill-armed recruits. These are a combination of Redoubt miniatures, a single Essex miniature, a flag bearer from Renegade and some figs I can't identify, . The Redoubt are nicely animated but very oddly sculpted in terms of proportions, especially the heads and clothing. The flag was knocked together in Photoshop from free images found on the web.

The Loyale Goodfolk of Ye Three Leggged Duck Publick House are the patrons of a pub in Oxford and hence fiercely loyal to Thee Kyng, the more so the longer they have been drinking. Goodman Duck named the pub after the only resident of the pond behind his establishment, William Waddler the three legged duck.

ECW Artilley in 28mm

Still on the ECW, here is my artillery park composed of a master gunner in Colonel Richard Fielding, accompanied by a pair of falcons and a saker. These are all Redbout from memory. I've mixed the kits up quite a bit for variety. I'm planning to add a culverin and possibly a mortar at some stage.

Sir Gilbert Talbot's Regiment of Foote

Here's the last of the three painted foot, Sir Gilbert Talbot's Regiment of Foote in yellow coats. Again, these are mostly Renegade with a few fleaBay purchases of undeterminded manufacturer thrown in for variety. I'll play these as 16 x unarmoured raw pike with 2 x sleeves of 12 shotte.

I have a fourth and final unit on the painting table now, a green coated regiment that will most likey be fielded as Northampton's. I've done all the flags myself in Photoshop meaning I can do any of the captain's or senior officer's colours.

I'm also going to do a circular command base for each unit with the colonel, staff and his colour. These have no place in WECW but I've seen others do it and it finishes the unit off nicely. Maybe someone can enlighten me, I think this is something required in the Pike & Shotte rules?

Sir Allen Apsley's Regiment of Foote

Here's the next unit, Sir Allen Apsley's Regiment of Foote. Again, these are mostly Renegade with a few fleaBay purchases of undeterminded manufacturer thrown in for variety. I'll play these as 16 x unarmoured steady pike with 2 x sleeves of 12 shotte.

Prince Rupert's Blewcoate Regiment of Foote

Hi All,

I've been very quiet of late in terms of blogging. This is entirely due to a determined frontal  assault on the lead mountain. Tomorrow we're playing a very large game of Warhammer ECW and I have been painting like a man possessed. In the last 4 weeks I've completed 140 miniatures and 2 artillery pieces.

Here's the first of them, Prince Rupert's Blewcoate Regiment of Foote. These are mostly Renegade with a few fleaBay purchases of undeterminded manufacturer thrown in for variety. I'll play these as 16 x heavy armoured veteran pike with 2 x sleeves of 12 shotte.

Crawling Chaos!

Yes, yes, I know, I should be Ogreing away, but when Cory showed me this RAFM miniature of that old H.P. Lovecraft fave Nyarlathotep, aka The Crawling Chaos, and asked if I'd give it a bash, it looked too good to refuse.

Now descriptions of this guy are, by necessity, fairly thin on the ground; these things are scarier if they're only half-described, after all. The human imagination is quite capable of filling in the blanks. So while there's a version out there described as having a red tentacle for a face and which spends a fair bit of time howling at the moon, that's pretty much it.

So here he is; yep, the red tentacle is very much in evidence, but I thought I'd go for something a bit more otherworldly for the rest of the fig, shading up from blue through purple and on to red. Big learning curve on this one! I hope I've carried it off.

A couple of work in progress shots;

I debated the pros and cons of either a molten rock base or an icebound base (he's come in from the cosmic void, so either he's carrying a lot of heat from re-entry, or he's just manifested from the absolute zero of the interstellar gulf... yeah, a bit too much thought went into this aspect of the project), but I had a word with Cory and he suggested a glistening slime finish. OK, so what do I use to depict the slime? Cory recommends 5-minute Araldite with a couple of drops of ink added.

Well, it's worth a try, so I mix up a batch and add purple ink. Hey, not bad... then I get a brainstorm. I get a couple of inches of 20lb nylon fishing line and dip it in the purple epoxy glue, leaving either end free of the goop. I leave it to dry, secured in the claws of the hobby magnifier (finally! found a use for this thing).

When it's dried, I have a rigid loop of shiny slime waiting to be applied to the glistening form of the Outer God. Trim the ends, apply some clear epoxy, make a SAN roll, and stick it to the hellbeast!

Emboldened by my success, I mix up a red batch and repeat the procedure with the nylon line, and throw a few spare blobs around for good measure, on the ends of claws or tentacles.

So here he is in his finished state.

I'm quite pleased with the ropy slime effect, but its applicability is limited largely to eldritch/squamous/rugose/gibbering/blasphemous creatures (strike out that Lovecraftian adjective which does not apply).

And I have an Ogre army to finish, so no more slime for the time being! WHY am I so easily distracted...?
