Painting Challenge Bonus Round - Dark Age Fort!

This week saw me submit my third bonus round entry into Curt's wonderful Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge. The theme for this round was Defensive Terrain so I took the opportunity to scratch-build a "small" Norman motte and bailey fort for use in dark age gaming.

You can view more images and the background here. While you're there please take the time to look at the other super entries and cast you vote for your favourites.

Thanks for popping by!

Cheers,
Millsy

  2. A lovely little fort.

I've been wanting to build something similar for a long time. I always go overboard in the design stage thinking there needs to be MORE BUILDINGS in the bailey and then get overwhelmed and give up as it gets too complicated or starts to seem like too much work. But what you have executed here is utterly beautiful in it's simplicity. I will have to revisit my castle building plans.

    Less is more!

    1. Thanks Tim! I determined very early on that I didn't want to build a massive fort for three reasons. Firstly, I wanted it to be easily transportable, secondly it had to have a sensible sized footprint and finally, because I can always make modular walls to surround my town if I want something bigger.

    1. Thanks Michal. Me too! Only had one game with it so far and it was a blast. I've been refining the SAGA siege rules we used so I'll post them here once we've play-tested them a couple more times.

  12. Wow - superbly done, Millsy. Very, very impressive. Love all the details you packed into it - like the stone work inside the fortress, as well carved ends of the timber. Amazing!
