2016-17 Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge thoughts...

Despite Curt not formally announcing anything as yet there's a definite buzz starting to build across the gaming blogosphere as the 2016-17 instalment of the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge draws closer.

I'm going to participate once again in what will be my fifth consecutive effort. This evening I've been faffing about NOT doing any prep and instead having a bit of fun looking at past efforts. In order to keep Miles happy I've conducted a little statistical analysis of the previous four years...

Lies, damned lies and statistics...

Each year I've tried to challenge myself in a different way, shifting my focus from one area to another. Last year I really hammered the bonus rounds, racking up a total of 906 points from those along the way and gaining a podium finish in every single round. This year I'm going to cherry pick just 2-3 bonus rounds I think and try and find some other area to dive into. Not sure what that will be at this point though.

So tomorrow I'll start prepping in anger and at the same time try to clear a few half finished projects lurking about as well. I find it a good incentive to be able to start with a clean workbench so I need to get my finger out to make sure that's the case before kick-off.

Cheers,
Millsy

  1. I have about about 1000 prepped figures. But if I paint them all I'll have to give up work. Now there's an idea

  2. It will be interesting to see what you come up with for this year Millsy :)

I'm going to be skipping the bonus rounds again this year, unless what I have on the table at the time matches the theme.

  3. Good to see others starting to prep for the Challenge this year.

Like Tamsin, I won't be able to add to the bonus rounds unless they match what I am all ready painting.

Looking forward to seeing everyones efforts this year which I think is my sixth consecutive year.

    Cheers, Ross

  5. Nice work mate - the spreadsheet Gods will be pleased with you!

With a history like that (and mine is shameful in comparison and thus will not be published!) it will be tough to maintain your official GIMP status.
Unofficially though, some labels are hard to shed :-)

    1. Yeah Millsy is a GIMP...

Mind if you paint two things this year you will be in contention!

Perhaps, although I now have solid fact to dispute the title given my performance during the 2015-16 season. It will be interesting to see whether Miles remains true to his nature and reassigns the title when faced with hard evidence!

    4. Lies, damn lies and statistics... And who control the master spreadsheet again?
      Good luck shedding that label!

  6. If last year is anything to go by, I plan to faff about for the first two weeks, panic wildly for another two, run off for a week to a holiday destination, throw a few figs into the mix, and then tail off production as I return to work. A sure-fire plan for victory!

  7. I have a little prep work on the table too

Think bonus rounds will only be if the fit around a certain dusty theme I am running with..

  8. Mr Millsy:

Your post has brought a tear to my eye and a smile in the deep dark thing I call a heart. You've joined the spreadsheet clan and I'm proud of you.

As for the "GIMP" status, it's true it was originally awarded for the Greatest Improvement in Miniature Production, but as I've peered into the actuarial columns for deeper meaning it's seems that the tour are the only person who can bear this title with such aplomb. You are now and always will be "a GIMP" in the hearts of miniature gamers around the world.

Congrats Sir! I tip my brush to you.

    Miles

  9. I have to say that I do find the faff just as enjoyable as the prepping these days, mostly because it often involves buying new shinies! This will be my fish challenge too and I ave to say that I am thinking along similar lines, there will, I'm sure be a couple of bonus rounds, but I also need to push on with a couple of other projects.

  10. My aim is to get some stuff in my collection completed and if it matches a theme challenge that's good but only a coincidence. Not really purchased any new stuff for the challenge and don't really plan to. So much in my mountain to paint and build. cheers

  11. Good to see the challenge prep starting up! Your 2014-15 score does set quite an epic benchmark for painting speed.

I'm still thinking about if I should prep anything or not. My interests seem to go in every darn direction and figuring out what I want to be painting 3 months from now seems almost impossible. I actually still have some unpainted minis that I prepped for my first Painting challenge in 2012-13...

  12. Nice to see the stats. I'm taking this year off. My hobby area is a shambles and I need to sort things out. On a side note, I finished and posted the first issue of the Oldhammer in the New World Fanzine. I credit you and WBQ as the inspiration. I can send you a copy if you like. I just didn't want to spam you.
