I've got a virus. It *could* be man flu. I feel like hammered sh1t. As a consequence the photos attached to this post are serious contenders for some of my worst ever miniature photography. Please just bear with me, the items shown do look better that this in real life, honest....
One more project "complete" this week with a final point of hearthguard added to my SAGA Normans, bringing me up to a solid 6 points plus options. Unlike almost everything else around here these only arrived last Sunday so there's an element of the unreal in seeing them completed. I was spurred on by the copy of Age of the Wolf that arrived with them though so perhaps not such a surprise?
These were started during Paint and Chat with some lads from the AHPC and the genial atmosphere saw them more than half done in one session. Nice!
The Kingdom of Britannia fleet continues to swell with completion of all the submersibles as well. All that is left to do now to close this off (OK, for the time being) is a couple of fliers. I'm not 100% sold on the colour of the ocean but I needed something that would contrast with the blue of the hulls so I deliberately overstated the green a bit.
That's it for now. [cough][sniffle]
Cheers,
Millsy

Another Dystopian Wars - Kingdom of Britannia Update
Not quite so much progress to report as last week I'm afraid. Having said that, the aircraft carrier appearing below is a BIG bugger and took the equivalent of three capital ships plus some more in terms of effort to complete.
All that's left to do now is a couple of bombers and some submersibles. All things being equal I should be winding this project down next weekend.
Cheers,
Millsy

Dystopian Wars - Kingdom of Britannia Update
Week one of the push to finish my Kingdom of Britannia fleet for Dystopian Wars has been most profitable. I've finished a large chunk of the surface force which is really pleasing as I thought it would take another week at least to reach this point.
Here's some shots of everything finished since last Sunday's kick-off post...
The only slightly disappointing aspect is the blue on the hulls doesn't match the existing stuff. It's a bit darker and I suspect that's because I used a different colour and have run out. Coupled with zero notes and a dodgy memory of the original process and this is what happens. No matter, I'll just update the original hulls to the darker blue which I prefer anyway as it happens.
Next week... carrier, aircraft and submersibles!
Cheers,
Millsy

One battleship, two heavy cruisers, three light cruisers, three support cruisers, nine destroyers and nine frigates. I'll do that math for you... 27 surface craft in total!
In the end it's all about the heavies so here are some close-ups.
Next week... carrier, aircraft and submersibles!

Next up... Dystopian Wars Kingdom of Britannia
Right.... so time for the next big project "finishing" effort. As discussed last post this will be an all out assault on all the remaining Dystopian Wars Kingdom of Britannia naval miniatures. I've just bought a copy of the simplified Fleet Action rules and we're discussing a big name in about six weeks so I'm seriously motivated.
Most of this stuff I picked up at CANCON earlier this year for an absolute song. It hardly even qualifies as lead pile it's been here for such a short time! I've spent some time this weekend prepping and will finish that stage today hopefully so I can paint through the week. We're due a load of rain thankfully so I won't be able to do any prep so best be done before hand. I love painting while it rains so I'm quite looking forward to it!
Here's everything I've got to do...
That's not the easiest to see due to the black undercoat already applied to some stuff so here's a quick list:
1 x Fleet Carrier and tiny fliers
1 x Battleship
2 x Hood Battlecruisers
3 x Cruisers
9 x Destroyers
9 x Frigates
1 x Submarine Wolf Pack
2 x Scout Planes
That's quite a lot of stuff but it paints up relatively quickly and is a nice diversion from all the infantry painted of late.
I'm planning on continuing with the same colour scheme. For those who have not seen my previous stuff, here is what my existing force looks like...

Dystopian Wars Kingdom of Britannia Force Complete
With the Painting Challenge pushing me along I'm cranking completed stuff out a cracking pace. As a consequence I'm happy to report I've finished my Kingdom of Britannia Force for Dystopian Wars. Not bad considering I started about two weeks ago. :-)
In total the force now stands at around 1250 game points which is more than enough til the rest of the lads catch up. The last stuff to be added was a dreadnought...
You can view the rest of the force here.
Just quickly before I finish up, everyone here at C&G wishes our friends and their families all the best for 2014. Happy New Year folks.
Cheers,
Millsy

Dystopian Wars Kingdom of Britannia Fleet
So Christmas has gone by for another year and amongst the new toys beneath the tree I found two wonderful gifts - firstly the Dystopian Wars rule book and secondly a pile of inspiration to start my Kingdom of Britannia fleet (which has been languishing in a box for quite some time now).
Despite the fact I knew I'd not score as many points in the painting challenge as the effort to paint these is worth, I simply couldn't resist and out came the brushes. I was sorely tempted to go with the "standard" dazzle pattern on the hulls but it has been done so many times before I decided to try something different. I've gone with a royal blue and bronze scheme with white highlights. It looks quite striking en masse and is easy to replicate which is a real bonus.
Here are some shots of progress so far...
I've got a couple of aircraft and a dreadnought complete as well but they can't appear hear til Curt has displayed them so stay tuned.
This is likely the last post for 2013 so it only remains to welcome aboard Warlord Pail and wish all our friends and followers a wonderful New Year and fabulous 2014.
Cheers,
Millsy

Our first FLoB game
Russ and I played our first game of Form Line of Battle (FLoB) on Sunday afternoon and it went pretty well. I was playing Royalist French (Grade II) with a 1st rate Ville de Paris (104) and 2 3rd Rates, Pluton (74) and Northumberland (74). Russ was playing the Russians (Grade III) with 2 1st Rates Rotislav (100), Knyaz Vladimir (100), a 3rd Rate Kir Ioann (74). First up we rolled for quality with Russ managing to have an inept Captain and a poor crew on his flagship but otherwise pretty well, with an experienced and a veteran crew on his last 2 ships. I on the other hand rolled a inspired captain and veteran crew for my flagship, with the rest of my fleet just being experienced.
So then it was time to play, we rolled to see who set up, and then rolled the wind and away we went. This is completely wrong BTW you roll wind first and then set up ensuring you are as up wind as possible, with the player winning the tactical initiative getting the weather gage – this is important we ignored it
doh!
Now that we were playing Russ had to claw up wind off a lee shore, failed his first attempt at tacking and then drifted in chains back towards the cliff, I flirted with running aground on an island but recovered easily. Russ on the 2nd attempt succeeds at tacking but misjudges his 2nd attempt and sails off board.
Let’s get this clear, sailing is hard work but quite fun, we played for over an hour without shooting and it was still exciting just not running aground or into each other. We worked out normal movement pretty quickly and I’d say it worked pretty well we particularly liked the variable distance moved, tacking is a bit harder but very important, we think we worked out the procedure for tacking but weren’t always sure we ended up facing the correct direction after woods but a tacking template will sort that out easily enough.
I followed Russ too far downwind to engage I should have waited for him to come up to me so we ended up playing right down near the cliff constantly tacking against the wind. The Damage system reminds me a lot of Canvas Eagles where 1 really good roll seem to make the difference regardless of the combat factors, so despite getting a lot of rakes in, I rolled pretty ordinarily and couldn’t make up for the difference in ship size. Russ rolled very well and finally sank the Pluton with a “shattered” result.
Every other roll Russ made went the other way though, he managed to fail to tack at least another 3 times with the most infamous episode being his Flagship Rotislav drifting in chains into giving Northumberland a point blank stern raking shot which despite me only doing minimal damage made him fail his strike test. He then drifted into the Northumberland and which caused us both to lose 2 masts.
The Final result was the French had 1 ship destroyed and 2 crippled with the Russians having 1 crippled ship strike so a minor victory to the Russians.
All in all I think it’s a good rule set my only concern is the difference between the grade costs is too high, I cannot see how Nug with the British will be able to beat the Grade III fleets they are just too big, and if Nug rolled even 1 poor crew I think he would be doomed. Apart from that Russ and I had great fun and mastering the actual sailing part of the game looks to be a challenge.
Cheers
Cory
